While many spooky season fans jump straight into slasher flicks and haunted-house horrors for their annual movie marathons, there’s one actor who deserves his own spotlight every October: Tim Curry. From cult musicals and fantasy epics to eerie comedies and villainous delights, Curry’s career has become a celebration of everything weird, wicked and wonderfully theatrical about Halloween. Not only is he everyone’s favorite Halloween Grand Wizard, but Tim Curry has become a permanent fixture of the season itself.
So here’s a little flair, fantasy and fright for a Tim Curry movie watch:
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
Legend (1985)
Clue (1985)
The Worst Witch (1986)
It (1990)
FernGully: The Last Rainforest (1992)
The Three Musketeers (1993)
Congo (1995)
Addams Family Reunion (1998)

After captivating audiences with his breakout role as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) the ultimate midnight movie cult classic that turned science fiction and horror tropes into glittering musical chaos. Curry continued to explore a wide range of eccentric and theatrical roles throughout the late ’70s and early ’80s. By the time he appeared as Darkness in Legend (1985), he had perfected the art of transforming into larger-than-life characters, delivering a performance so commanding beneath prosthetics that it redefined movie villains for a generation.

Also in 1985, Curry traded darkness and despair for sharp wit and rapid-fire humor as Wadsworth the butler in Clue. The film’s gothic mansion, stormy atmosphere and macabre comedy gave him another playground to showcase his range; proving he could move from terrifying to hilarious without missing a beat. Just a year later, he leaned into pure Halloween camp as the Grand Wizard in The Worst Witch (1986). Complete with a swirling cape, cheesy graphics and the gloriously strange anthem “Anything Can Happen on Halloween.” It continues to be an absolute Halloween much watch for a generation of 80s kids.

Long before Bill Skarsgård brought Pennywise to the big screen, Tim Curry had already etched the character into pop-culture memory. His portrayal in the 1990 television adaptation of It balanced childlike charm with chilling menace, creating a villain that terrified an entire generation without relying on modern effects. Curry’s Pennywise wasn’t just scary, he was that “image” of PENNYWISE until 2017.

Even beyond his most iconic roles, Curry continued to embrace characters steeped in chaos, corruption, and a touch of camp . . . that make perfect additions to the Curry Spooky Season watch list. One might not think to add FernGully: The Last Rainforest (1992) but the image of Hexxus alone screams THIS IS HALLOWEEN (no he wasn’t in that lol). Curry’s role as the toxic pollution spirit Hexxus remains one of his most memorable and creepy. He followed that with his delightfully devious turn as Cardinal Richelieu in The Three Musketeers (1993) and the eccentric treasure hunter Herkermer Homolka in Congo (1995), once again proving that no matter how wild the premise, Curry could steal the show.

THE BONUS WATCH! While EVERYONE remembers the ICONIC Raul Julia’s portrayal as Gomez Addams from the early ’90s films, fewer realize that Tim Curry later stepped into the role in Addams Family Reunion (1998). Released straight to video, the film didn’t make the same cultural impact, but Curry’s take on Gomez added another layer to his legacy theatrical, charming, and perfectly at home among the spooky and the strange.
Most of these Tim Curry classics can be streamed or rented online: The Rocky Horror Picture Show, It, FernGully, Clue, Legend, Congo, The Three Musketeers. The Worst Witch and Addams Family Reunion are the exceptions; they’re harder to find via legal streaming and may require digging through digital rental catalogs, physical media or YouTube.
From haunted castles to suburban nightmares, Tim Curry brought sophistication, wit and gleeful mischief to every role. His performances defined an era when horror could be funny, fantasy could be frightening and camp could be downright legendary. Revisiting these classics is a reminder that spooky season simply isn’t complete without a little Tim Curry magic.
